Australia women 1 for 174 (Lanning 80*, Bolton 77*) beat South Africa women 8 for 173 (Lee 102, du Preez 36, Harris 3-31) by nine wicketsScorecard and ball-by-ball details Nicole Bolton and Meg Lanning scored unbeaten fifties to put on an unbroken 161-run stand for the second wicket to lead Australia to a nine-wicket win over South Africa in Sydney. The win handed Australia a 3-0 series victory with two matches still to be played.A rain delay meant the match was reduced to 32 overs after South Africa opted to bat. The visitors lost Suné Luus and Dinesha Devnarain early but opener Lizelle Lee and Mignon du Preez joined forces in the ninth over and put on 110 off 104 deliveries to put South Africa in a strong position. Lee dominated the partnership - which ended with du Preezs dismissal for 36 - and eventually went on to score her maiden ODI century. However, she could not prevent a South Africa collapse - they slipped from 143 for 2 in the 26th over to finishing on 173 for 8 as no other batsman reached double-figures. Medium-pacer Grace Harris (3 for 31) took two of those wickets, while three batsmen were run out.Australias chase began with the early loss of opener Elyse Villani (13) in the first over, but South Africa had no further success. Lanning - who had put on a record 224 with Ellyse Perry in the second ODI with her ninth century - took charge of yet another partnership, scoring a 75-ball 80, while Bolton scored her first fifty of the series and sixth overall, with an 83-ball 77. Their partnership took Australia past the target with 4.5 overs to spare. This was the last match of the ICC Womens Championship, which Australia had already won last month after beating West Indies. South Africa, who had a shot at automatic qualification for next years World Cup at the beginning of this series, finished sixth and will have another shot at qualification along with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Thailand and Zimbabwe in the qualifying tournament early next year in Sri Lanka. England, New Zealand and West Indies sealed the other automatic qualification spots. The Dallas Stars wasted no time addressing one of their needs this offseason, making a deal for a veteran defenceman that should help on the power play. Numbers Game examines the Stars adding Sergei Gonchar. The Stars Get: D Sergei Gonchar. 39-year-old Sergei Gonchar is, naturally, no longer the player he was at his peak, but has still been a valuable part of the Ottawa Senators blueline for the past three seasons. Over the last two years, Gonchar has 64 points in 119 games (0.54 points per game ranks 18th in the league over that span) while averaging more than 23 minutes of ice time per game. Hes always been an offensive defenceman, his 101 power play goals and 775 career points ranking 10th and 18th all-time, respectively, among blueliners. Even at this stage of his career, Gonchar can get the job done on the power play. In three seasons with the Senators, 46 of his 91 points (50.5%) have come on the power play, so hes likely to have a role in improving the Stars 18th-ranked power play, which means potentially slight production upgrades for the likes of Jamie Benn, Loui Eriksson, Ray Whitney and Alex Goligoski, the four returnees who saw the most power play time for the Stars last season. Gonchars game isnt great at even-strength. Hes susceptible to get beaten by quicker forwards, so managing his match-ups and zone starts is necessary to get the best results. In my Stars Off-Season Game Plan, I had suggested that a top four defenceman was one of their needs, so neww GM Jim Nill was quick about addressing that area.ddddddddddddDallas made a significant financial commitment, two years and $10-million, to keep Gonchar from hitting the open market and that second season is a sizeable show of faith for a player at this stage of his career. Getting Gonchar also gives the Stars some flexibility on their defence. There is no need to rush any of their prospects but, if some younger players are ready to make the jump, that could open up trade possibilities with one of the Stars other veteran defencemen, particularly if that is whats needed to bolster the Stars forward lines. The Senators Get: A sixth-round pick. Getting anything in return for Gonchar counts as a bonus for the Senators because he would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 5th. A sixth-round pick doesnt offer a lot of value, about a one-in-seven chance of yielding an NHL player, but thats more than they would receive if Gonchar left as a free agent. With Senators D Erik Karlsson missing a good portion of the 2013 season, they needed Gonchars puck-moving ability, but with Karlsson presumably healthy for next season, the Sens can look to a younger, less expensive, alternative in that role. Before any other acquisitions occur, Patrick Wiercioch looks like one who could benefit from an increased role next season.
